I was born to Salvation Army parents, Majors L.C. and Mary Edna Barrington. They served as corps officers in the Carolinas, Texas, and Florida Divisions, and in the ARC in Washington, D.C., Jacksonville, FL., San Antonio, TX., and Louisville, KY. Banding has been a huge part of my life from the age of 9 when Captain W.H.R. Goodier led a group of boys into the band room at the Southeast Corps in Washington, DC and told us to pick out and instrument we wanted to play. I remember being the last one in line and taking the only instrument left, a baritone horn. We moved to Jacksonville, FL (ARC) and thanks to the insistence of the corps YPSM, Mrs. Elsie Jones, I joined the corps band at age 13. She told her bandmaster son, Tom, that I WAS going to play, even though I was a year shy of the “official” age! At age 16, I joined the Southern Staff Band and was blessed to play euphonium for the next 43 years until my retirement from the band in 2012. It has been my joy and honor to play in bands of all sizes throughout the Southern Territory for all these years.
